Waste workers are the backbone of every waste management system, yet their skills, safety needs and role in the community often go unrecognised. IPCA’s capacity building programme works to change this by equipping waste workers with practical knowledge, protective equipment and the confidence to lead change on the ground.
Through hands-on training and field demonstrations, workers learn to segregate wet and dry waste at source, understand the problems caused by mixed waste, and follow safe handling and hygiene practices. Every worker is given a safety kit with essentials like gloves and masks, so that safer working habits become part of the daily routine.
Empowerment goes beyond training. IPCA positions waste workers as on-the-ground communicators, capable of driving household-level awareness during their daily collection rounds. Supported by IEC (Information, Education & Communication) materials for community outreach, workers carry the message of segregation and responsible waste handling to every household they serve, and in the process earn the recognition and respect their work deserves.
